Overview

Freddie Mercury, legendary frontman of the rock band Queen, found a serene escape in Montreux, Switzerland, during his later years. The group had purchased Mountain Studios, located within the Montreux Casino, where Mercury recorded Queen’s final album, **“Made in Heaven”**, in the peaceful surroundings he came to cherish. Born in 1946 on Zanzibar, Mercury (originally Farrokh Bulsara) had moved to London as a young man, where his iconic journey with Queen began in 1970. In 1978, Mercury’s bond with Montreux deepened during the recording of the Queen album **“Jazz”**. The tranquil charm of Lake Geneva and the town’s relaxed atmosphere captivated him, leading him to make it his home. His famous quote, “If you want peace of soul, come to Montreux,” reflects his deep connection to the area. To honor Mercury’s legacy and his enduring link to Montreux, a bronze statue of him was erected along the lakefront in 1996. Today, it stands as a beloved spot where fans gather to pay their respects, leaving flowers and tributes to the man whose music touched millions around the world.
